Improving hypertension control in Guatemala

Status: Ongoing

Institute of Nutrition of Central American and Panama (INCAP) is dedicated to contributing to food and nutrition security in Central American and the Dominican Republic. INCAP Research Center for the Prevention of Chronic Diseases (CIIPEC) is a globally recognized research center in the area of prevention and control of chronic non-communicable diseases. CIIPEC aims to strengthen capacities of governmental and academic institutions, particularly in Central America and the Dominican Republic, by providing evidence-based solutions through the generation and dissemination of scientific evidence and human resources training in the area of prevention and control of chronic non-communicable disease and their risk factors.

With the support of LINKS, INCAP will catalyze the sustainability of a HEARTS-aligned program in three Guatemalan rural municipalities through community-based, patient-centered strategies (social accountability interventions, municipal pharmacies, digital task sharing tools) for improving hypertension control that are financially self-sufficient and show evidence of improvement through the HEARTS "Systems for Monitoring" guide and RE-AIM QuEST indicators.

"Receiving the LINKS grant puts us in a better position to continue current efforts to evaluate community-based, patient-centered, and sustainable strategies for the control of high blood pressure in rural areas of Guatemala."

- Manuel Ramirez Zea, Head of INCAP Research Center for the Prevention of Chronic Diseases (CIIPEC)
