Dear [INSERT ADDRESSEE’S NAME HERE],

Like other countries around the world, [COUNTRY] is facing a huge burden of morbidity and mortality from diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Poor nutrition and diets contribute to [INSERT NUMBER OF ANNUAL NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE DEATHS IN YOUR COUNTRY] every year. We, at [NAME OF YOUR ORGANIZATION], are grateful for your leadership and commitment to tackling this growing public health priority.

Based on available evidence, one of the most effective interventions to address diet-related NCDs is through healthy public food procurement and service policies. Every day, thousands of meals are provided in public settings, including schools, government offices and recreational facilities. Government funds should not be spent on food that contributes to unhealthy diets. By ensuring that all meals and snacks served and sold in these places meet healthy nutrition standards, we can make healthy foods the default option for thousands of meals.

We have joined Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies, in their campaign to promote Public Funds for Healthy Foods. Together, we are calling for the rapid adoption of the WHO Action framework for developing and implementing public food procurement and service policies for a healthy diet. This framework serves as a tool for governments to develop, monitor and evaluate public food procurement and service policies that align with the core principles of a healthy diet, which include:

• limiting sodium consumption and ensure that salt is iodized;
• limiting the intake of free sugars;
• shifting fat consumption from saturated fats to unsaturated fats;
• eliminating industrially-produced trans fats;
• increasing consumption of whole grains, vegetables, fruit, nuts and pulses; and
• ensuring the availability of free, safe drinking water.

[The following can be tailored to the expertise or authority of the stakeholder you are addressing.]

By using healthy nutrition guidelines to inform the development of national public food procurement policies, you will play a leadership role in improving the health of our nation’s people, reducing government health care costs and saving lives from diet-related disease.

Thank you for your consideration and support for improving healthy public food procurement policies in [COUNTRY].

Sincerely,
